The Challenge
Garland Animal Clinic (GAC), a veterinary clinic in Spokane, had worked with BCA for 25 years when longtime owner Dr. Steve Boharski sold the practice and began retiring. BCA helped transition GAC’s technology environment to its new parent company and systems.
Just weeks after the transition, the parent company’s infrastructure was compromised by ransomware. The attack disrupted operations across hundreds of veterinary clinics within the organization, including the systems Garland Animal Clinic had recently migrated to.
GAC needed a way to restore operations quickly without waiting for the parent company’s broader recovery effort to be completed.
The Solution
Because BCA had assisted with the original migration, the team had ensured that GAC’s previous environment remained accessible.
BCA moved Garland Animal Clinic back onto its former network and restored the clinic to full functionality within hours. This gave employees access to the systems they needed while the parent company continued working to recover its wider infrastructure.
BCA’s backup approach also played an important role in the recovery. The company’s existing backup methods allowed GAC to restore operations in a fraction of the time it took the parent organization to recover functionality across its other clinics.
The Results
While the parent company spent months recovering its other veterinary clinics from the ransomware attack, Garland Animal Clinic remained operational with BCA’s support. According to the case study, GAC continued using the restored environment until its parent company came back online approximately six months later.
The incident demonstrated the value of maintaining reliable backups and a recoverable IT environment, even during a major ownership and technology transition.
As Dr. Steve Boharski, retired owner of Garland Animal Clinic, explained:
“When ransomware brought down our parent company and all of their other clinics, BCA had us back up and running in hours. I was telling everyone about what they did for us.”
